The Court of Appeal in Lagos has reaffirmed the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) as the statutory body responsible for regulating tax practice in Nigeria.
The judgment, delivered on 15 July 2026, reinforces the legal powers granted to CITN under its establishing Act and brings further clarity to who is authorised to regulate professional tax practice in the country.
The case stemmed from a long-running legal dispute over whether CITN has the exclusive authority to regulate tax practitioners and enforce professional standards. By dismissing the appeal, the Court of Appeal upheld earlier decisions recognising CITN’s regulatory role.
This means the Institute remains responsible for setting professional standards, certifying tax practitioners, enforcing ethical conduct and maintaining discipline within Nigeria’s tax profession.
The decision is significant because Nigeria’s tax system is undergoing major reforms. As tax administration becomes more digital and compliance requirements continue to evolve, businesses and individuals are increasingly relying on qualified tax professionals for guidance.
For accountants, lawyers and other professionals who provide tax-related services, the judgment reinforces the need to comply with the provisions of the CITN Act where their services amount to professional tax practice.
The ruling also provides greater certainty for businesses seeking tax advisory services. Knowing that there is a recognised statutory regulator helps strengthen confidence in professional standards and accountability across the industry.
Freelancers, remote workers and creators should also pay attention.
As more Nigerians earn income from multiple sources, across borders and through digital platforms, tax compliance is no longer limited to large companies. Working with qualified professionals and keeping proper financial records has become increasingly important as the country’s tax system continues to modernise.
Good record keeping remains the foundation of tax compliance.
Keeping invoices, contracts, payment confirmations and expense records organised makes it easier to understand your tax obligations and prepare for filing when the time comes.
That’s why LessaTax helps freelancers, remote workers, creators and business owners organise their income, expenses and supporting documents throughout the year instead of waiting until tax season.
