Place: Koko, Delta State — a historic riverside community along the Benin River

If someone visited Asaba for the first time and asked me to recommend somewhere different from the usual city attractions, I would suggest taking a trip toward Koko and the Benin River.

What makes the area special is not just the river itself. It is the combination of nature, history and everyday Nigerian community life. You get to see a quieter side of Delta State away from the busy roads and commercial areas.

🌊 Why is it worth visiting?

The riverside environment gives you an opportunity to slow down, enjoy the scenery and experience a part of Delta State that many visitors may overlook.

For someone interested in photography, the surrounding landscape, boats, waterways and local activities can also provide interesting scenes to capture.

But there is something else that makes Koko interesting: its history. Koko is associated with the famous Koko protest of 1894, when Chief Nana and the people of Koko resisted the Royal Niger Company's trading practices. The event eventually became an important episode in the history of British colonial expansion in the Niger Delta.

Don't visit simply to take a quick picture and leave.

If you go with someone who knows the area, spend time talking to local residents and learning about the community. The stories and local perspective can make the experience much more meaningful than simply visiting a tourist attraction.

Also, go during daylight and make your plans with someone familiar with the area, especially if it is your first visit.

For me, one of the best things about exploring places around Delta State is discovering that you don't always need a famous tourist attraction to have a memorable experience.

Sometimes, the river, the people, the history and the quiet atmosphere tell the real story of a place.
