If you asked me this five years ago, I would have said “Study abroad, no question.”

Now? I’m not so sure.

After hearing stories from Nigerians who’ve taken both paths, I realized most people are asking the wrong question.

The question isn’t, “Which is better?”

It’s, “Which one is better for the life you want?”

Here are a few things you should consider:

1. Study Abroad if you want to build an international career.

A master’s abroad can give you access to better research facilities, global networks, internships, and, in many countries, post-study work opportunities. For people planning to settle abroad long-term, it’s often more than a degree. It’s a pathway to a new life. But there’s a side people don’t talk about enough.

Moving abroad can be incredibly lonely. You’re adapting to a new culture, managing higher living costs, and competing in job markets that are far from guaranteed. A degree alone doesn’t automatically translate into a job.

2. A Local Master’s makes sense if your career is rooted in Nigeria.

If you’re building a business here, work in a profession where local networks matter, or simply don’t want to relocate, a Nigerian master’s can still be a smart investment.

You’ll spend far less, stay close to your support system, and avoid the financial pressure that often comes with studying overseas.

The biggest mistake I see people make

Too many people borrow huge amounts of money for a master’s abroad without asking one important question:

“Will this degree significantly improve my opportunities compared to what I already have?”

Sometimes the answer is yes.

Sometimes, the better investment is gaining work experience, building in-demand skills, or applying for fully funded scholarships instead of taking on debt.

So, which would I choose?

If I had a clear plan, enough funding (or a scholarship), and knew I wanted an international career, I’d study abroad.

I won’t take a loan to study abroad if I don’t have a clear career strategy.

A master’s degree should move your career forward, not just change your location.

If you had to choose today, would you do your master’s in Nigeria or abroad? More importantly, what’s the biggest reason behind your decision?
