That was the message from the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, during the 2026 National Tax Awareness Day organised by the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN).

According to Oyedele, Nigeria’s challenge is not simply about collecting more taxes. It is about building a tax system that is fair, trusted and works for everyone.

“We are still not getting enough revenue from tax. It is not about increasing taxes, but making sure that those who are supposed to pay tax actually do so. We want to promote fairness in tax administration.”

His message comes at a time when Nigeria is implementing major tax reforms aimed at simplifying compliance, improving transparency and strengthening the country’s tax administration.

Why CITN Took Tax Awareness to Nigerians

To support these reforms, CITN organised the 2026 National Tax Awareness Day under the theme:

Tax Awareness for National Growth Through Reforms, Compliance and Shared Prosperity.

Across the country, the institute held tax walks, roadshows, town hall meetings, market sensitisation campaigns, symposiums, radio programmes, quizzes and debates to educate Nigerians about the country’s changing tax landscape.

According to CITN President, Innocent Ohagwa, the campaign became necessary because too many misconceptions continue to surround the new tax reforms.

Some Nigerians believe the reforms introduced entirely new taxes on almost every economic activity.

Others believe the reforms exist only to generate more revenue for government.

Many business owners are also worried about compliance requirements without fully understanding the reliefs and taxpayer protections contained in the reforms.

CITN says these misconceptions have created unnecessary confusion, much of it driven by conflicting information circulating online.

The institute stressed that tax compliance should not be viewed as a burden but as a civic responsibility that supports national development. At the same time, government must continue to earn public trust through accountability, transparency and responsible use of tax revenue. (Vanguard News)

What This Means for Businesses

The conversation around tax in Nigeria is changing.

With ongoing reforms and digital initiatives such as Rev360, compliance is becoming more structured and increasingly digital.

For freelancers, remote workers, creators and business owners, understanding the new rules is only one part of staying compliant.

Maintaining proper financial records throughout the year is equally important.

When your records are organised, filing becomes easier, compliance becomes less stressful and costly mistakes are easier to avoid.

That is where LessaTax comes in.

We are building tools to help freelancers, remote workers and business owners stay organised all year, so tax season doesn’t become a last minute scramble.
