One mistake a lot of tourists make is waiting until they’re at the airport to buy souvenirs.

The options are usually fewer, and often more expensive.

If you want gifts that actually reflect Nigerian culture, these are two places I’d recommend visiting before you leave Lagos.

 1. Lekki Arts & Crafts Market

If you’re only visiting one souvenir market in Lagos, make it this one.

You’ll find almost everything here:

* Handwoven baskets
* Beaded jewellery
* Ankara bags
* Wooden carvings
* Paintings
* Leather sandals
* Traditional masks
* Home décor
* Miniature Nigerian sculptures

The market is known for bargaining, so don’t accept the first price you’re offered. Vendors usually expect a bit of negotiation, especially if you’re buying multiple items.

2. Kenteh Crafts (Landmark Lagos)

If you prefer a quieter shopping experience, Kenteh Crafts is a great option.

Located within Landmark, the store offers a carefully curated collection of handmade Nigerian crafts and gifts. The prices are generally fixed, and the shopping experience feels more relaxed than a traditional market.

You’ll find beautifully crafted souvenirs that are perfect for gifts or as keepsakes from your trip to Nigeria.

A few tips to give you a better shopping experience:

-Carry some cash. While many vendors accept transfers, cash can make bargaining easier.

-If you’re shopping at Lekki Arts & Crafts Market, compare prices at a few stalls before buying.

-If you’re flying home, consider how fragile your souvenirs are and pack them carefully.

Some of the best souvenirs aren’t the most expensive ones. They’re the ones with a story behind them.

If you’re a Lagosian or you’ve visited Lagos before, where else would you recommend tourists buy authentic Nigerian souvenirs?
