For years, a lot of us have been told the same thing: “Stop eating swallow if you want to be healthy.”

But what if the problem isn’t always the swallow? What if it’s how much of it we’re eating?

Let’s talk about some underrated benefits of popular Nigerian swallows.

1. Fufu

Fufu often gets a bad reputation, but traditional fermented fufu contains beneficial bacteria from the fermentation process. Many people don’t realize that fermentation has been part of African food traditions for centuries.

The bigger issue is usually portion size, not necessarily the food itself.

2. Amala

Whether it’s yam amala or plantain amala, this swallow contains dietary fibre and can be very filling. Plantain amala is especially popular among people looking for alternatives to more heavily processed carbohydrates.

3. Garri (Eba)

Eba is often dismissed as “just cassava,” but it can be a source of energy and fibre depending on how it’s processed. The trick is pairing it with nutrient-rich soups packed with vegetables, fish, or lean protein.

4. Fonio Swallow

This one doesn’t get nearly enough attention. Fonio is an ancient African grain that many people consider a nutritious alternative to some traditional staples. Some people even mix it with tiger nut flour for extra flavour and fibre.

5. Tiger Nut Flour Blends

Adding tiger nut flour to swallow mixes can increase fibre content and create a slightly sweeter taste without adding refined sugar.

Most traditional Nigerian foods aren’t automatically unhealthy. In many cases, the conversation should be less about eliminating them and more about:

✅ Portion control
✅ More vegetables
✅ Better soup choices
✅ Balanced meals

Because let’s be honest… a mountain-sized ball of swallow with very little soup is a different conversation entirely 😅

The swallow is not be the problem. The size of the swallow is.
