Just saw the video from Anambra and I’m honestly torn. A young woman was publicly punished by Umuada, the Igbo women’s group, for repeatedly assaulting her brother’s wife and defying warnings.
She was writhing on the ground as dozens of women in traditional attire carried out the flogging. Some people are calling it cultural justice, others are calling it outright barbaric.
This incident really highlights how some archaic Igbo customs are still being practiced in some parts of Igbo land. The truth is that most of these “customs” are mainly detrimental to women. I’ve never seen a man being flogged publicly for beating his wife.
At what point does tradition end and abuse begin?
