Bonny Kingdom and the Ogoni axis celebrated a major milestone on Monday as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially opened the 37.9-kilometre Bodo–Bonny Road for temporary use, easing travel for communities long burdened by difficult river crossings and expensive helicopter trips.
The multi-billion-naira project, awarded in December 2014 and constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc since October 2017, is now 90.98% complete. Represented by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, President Tinubu described the road as a “flagship accomplishment” of his Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The dream of the Bonny Kingdom has come true; the dream of the Bodo Kingdom has come true. No more risky river journeys, no more costly helicopter rides, no more hardship to reach this blessed island,” he said.
Temporary Opening Guidelines
- Road access: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily
- Only light vehicles permitted
- Motorcycles, tricycles, and heavy-duty trucks are prohibited.
- Full completion expected by March 2026
Senator Umahi noted that night travel remains suspended until safety measures are fully in place.
Tinubu Calls for Trailer Parks
To protect the road from premature wear, President Tinubu requested that the Rivers State Government allocate 20 plots each in Bodo and Bonny for trailer parks. He also commended Julius Berger and project manager Tim Nippert for their dedication.
Praise from State and National Leaders
Dr Benibo Anabraba, Secretary to the Rivers State Government, thanked the President for rescuing the project from years of delay, calling the temporary opening “a permanent joy” for the people of Bonny, Bodo, and Rivers State. Senator Barinada Mpigi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, also praised the President for supporting the Ogoni communities.
Project Update
Project Manager Tim Nippert confirmed that 35 kilometres of the dual carriageway are fully motorable, with the remaining sections and 11 bridges expected to be ready by the first quarter of 2026.
Strategic Impact
The Bodo–Bonny Road is the first federal road linking the mainland directly to Bonny Island, home to Nigeria LNG and other major energy investments. Its opening is set to transform commerce, mobility, and safety in the region. Hon. Abinye Blessing Pepple, Chairman of Bonny LGA, expressed confidence in the project’s completion under the current administration.
