In many Nigerian homes, especially in the eastern part of the country, Awolowo leaf, popularly known as Akwụkwọ Eliza, is a very familiar plant. It is a medicinal plant that grows easily around houses and requires little care. Many people value it because of its numerous health and traditional benefits.
These are some benefits of this leaf:
1. It helps with wound healing: One of the most common uses of Awolowo leaf is to treat minor wounds. Traditionally, people squeeze the fresh leaf to extract the juice and apply it directly to small cuts or wounds. It is believed to help stop bleeding and speed up healing. I have tried it before, and the bleeding on my leg stopped instantly.
2. Help with Stomach Issues: Awolowo leaf is sometimes used as a natural remedy for stomach upset. Some people squeeze the leaf and mix the juice with water to drink in small amounts to help calm stomach discomfort.
3. Supports Ulcer Relief: In traditional medicine, Awolowo leaf is often mentioned as helpful for people dealing with ulcer symptoms. The natural juice from the leaf is believed to help soothe the stomach lining.
4. Used for Ear Pain: Another common local use is for ear pain. The juice extracted from the leaf is sometimes warmed slightly, and a drop is placed in the ear to relieve discomfort. This is a well-known traditional practice in many Nigerian communities. I have experienced this one too; my neighbour used it on her child to relieve her of ear pain.
5. Helps with Fever and Cough: Some people also use Awolowo leaf as a herbal remedy for fever and cough. The leaves can be squeezed and mixed with warm water or honey before drinking.
One interesting thing about Awolowo leaf is how easily it grows. Even a small piece of the leaf can grow into a new plant when placed on soil. Because of this, many families keep it around the house as a “natural first aid plant.”
Awolowo leaf (Akwụkwọ Eliza) remains one of the popular medicinal plants used in traditional Nigerian homes. From treating minor wounds to helping with stomach discomfort, its usefulness has been passed down through generations.
When I was in secondary, I really thought it was only used for cleaning a dark board🤣, but it does more than that, so if you know some benefits I didn’t mention, you can add them in the comment section
