A lot of people DM me asking: "I'm a Senior Manager in a Nigerian bank(or whatever industry they are in), will I get the same role when I land?
I always pause.
The honest truth? Canada doesn’t just hire your "Title." They hire your "Context."
In Nigeria, a "Senior Manager" title carries weight, power, and history. In Canada, recruiters are looking for "Canadian Experience"—not because they doubt your brain, but because they doubt your understanding of their Systems.
When I moved in 2021, I realized fast that my Nigerian CV spoke a language that Canadian systems didn't yet translate.
If you want to avoid the "Survival Job" loop for 2 years, you need to do these three things:
De-title your Ego: Stop looking for "Senior Manager" roles on day one. Look for "Analyst" or "Specialist" roles in the right sector. It’s easier to climb a Canadian ladder once your foot is on the first step.
Translate your Achievements: Telling a Canadian recruiter you "Managed a team in Victoria Island" is good. Telling them you "Optimized a workflow that saved $200k using Lean Six Sigma" is better. Numbers and Methodology are universal.
Learn the "Code": I work in Policy now. I had to learn how the government "thinks." Every industry here has a secret language—find it and put it in your CV.
Don't spend your first year being "The Global Award Winner" in your head while working a job you hate.
Reset the CV. Learn the system. Then outwork everyone.
Has anyone here struggled with "re-starting" their career after relocating? What was the hardest part? Let’s talk.
