Some friendships don't just affect you, they start to define you whether you want them or not. Certain people carry so much negativity into every conversation that being to them eventually rubs off on how others see you too.
I had a friend like this back in school. Every conversation with her circled back to complaints or gossip about other people. At first, I didn't think much of it I just listened, the way friends do. But over time, it started draining me. Worse, people around us began associating me with her - assuming I was the same way, simply because we were always together. It got to a point where it almost defined who I was, even though it wasn't true. Eventually, i had to let the friendship go.
Looking back, here's what I've learned to watch for in friendships like that:
- Constant complaining. They focus on what's wrong, never what's working.
- Gossiping. They spread rumors about others instead of building people up.
- Criticising. They're quick to point out flaws, but rarely see your value.
- Draining conversations. You leave feeling tired, not encouraged.
Bad company corrupts good character and sometimes protecting your peace, and your name, means choosing distance over loyalty to a friendship that isn't serving you.
Have you ever had to walk away from a friendship because of how it made you feel, or how it made others see you?
