Ask ten Nigerians this simple question:
"Which soup deserves to be called the king of soups?"
You'll probably get ten different answers.
Someone will passionately defend Afang. Another person won't hear of anything except Egusi. The Oha lovers will step in. Then the Banga fans will remind everyone that flavor has a name. And before long, someone will confidently declare that Okra soup beats them all.
The funny thing is that none of them are completely wrong.
Our soups are more than food.
They carry the stories of our people, the ingredients our communities had access to and the traditions passed from one generation to another. Every bowl represents a different part of Nigeria, yet they all find a place on the same table.
Growing up, I realized that people don't just love a soup because of how it tastes.
They love it because it reminds them of home, of family gatherings, of Sundays after church or of that grandmother who always seemed to make it taste better than anyone else.
Maybe that's why these "best soup" debates never really end.
And honestly... I hope they never do.
Because every disagreement is another reminder of just how rich and diverse Nigerian cuisine truly is.
So now it's your turn.
If you could eat only ONE Nigerian soup for the rest of your life, which one would you choose and why?
