After taking a long break to read and conduct research, I discovered my niche as a Cybersecurity Instructor at a well-known tech school in Ibadan — a city that’s not only vibrant but also provides a conducive environment for growth. One crucial realization I’ve had in this role is the necessity of mastering the entire spectrum of cybersecurity. As an instructor, it’s essential to have a deep understanding of the fundamentals as well as in-depth knowledge of each area within the field. Without this comprehensive expertise, you risk falling out of touch with the ever-evolving cyber landscape, limiting yourself to teaching only what you know.

However, the real value of being a Cybersecurity Instructor lies in being versatile — knowing different areas within cybersecurity allows you to guide and mentor students effectively, no matter which path they choose to pursue. This continuous learning and updating of knowledge not only benefits the instructor but also enriches the learning experience for students.

It’s unfortunate, though, that some instructors focus solely on teaching without embracing the equally important role of mentorship. Mentorship goes beyond imparting knowledge; it involves guiding, supporting, and inspiring students to reach their full potential. If you’re considering a career as a Cybersecurity Instructor, I strongly recommend you strive to excel in both teaching and mentorship. By doing so, we can cultivate a generation of well-prepared, skilled cyber professionals who are ready to tackle the challenges of the digital world.

Additionally, a word of caution to HR professionals: while reviewing CVs, it’s easy to assume that every applicant is a suitable candidate. However, in your haste to fill positions, don’t overlook the importance of thorough testing and evaluation processes. It’s critical to ensure that the candidates you hire are not only knowledgeable but also capable of contributing effectively to your organization’s security posture.

I’ll be sharing more insights and tips soon — stay tuned. #Cybersecurity #Mentorship #TechEducation #HR #HiringTips
