I’ve passed through Mende more times than I can count, but I never actually stopped at the cane market until recently… and I’m glad I did.
Tucked inside Mende Cane Market, Maryland is a cluster of artisans quietly creating some of the most beautiful handmade pieces I’ve seen in a while.
From raffia bags to woven baskets, food trays, and even mirrors, everything is locally crafted. What stood out to me was that a lot of these items are made right there in the market. You’re not just buying decor, you’re watching the process happen in real time.
The price were better than I expected. I saw pieces going for as low as 1,000 naira. Of course, your bargaining skills will determine how sweet your deal gets. If you know how to price, you’ll leave very happy.
