The latest fiscal data reveals that government revenue is climbing rapidly. While this is a major win for the national treasury, it signals a more aggressive era of tax enforcement for business owners. It is important to look beyond the headline figure to understand where this money is coming from and what it means for your profit margins.

Total Revenue Growth: The government collected N15.8 trillion in the first five months of 2026. This represents a 49 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Surpassing Targets: These collections surpassed the government baseline growth target of 11.6 percent.

Oil Related Taxes: Collections rose by more than 20 percent to N3.96 trillion. This growth was largely supported by higher crude oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Non Oil Revenue: Collections rose by 12.3 percent to N8.2 trillion, reflecting stronger collections across various sectors of the economy.

Exclusions: It is vital to note that these figures exclude proceeds from revised personal income tax rates administered by state governments, which took effect from January 1 2026.

The Corporate Tax Reality: Despite the overall revenue surge, Company Income Tax declined to N1.37 trillion in Q1 2026 from N1.98 trillion recorded in the same period of 2025.

VAT Performance: Value Added Tax collections increased to N2.42 trillion in Q1 2026 from N2.06 trillion a year earlier, supported by stronger compliance and expanding digital tax collections.

Expert Insight: Dr. Muda Yusuf of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise stated that while the reform impact is positive, the composition matters. He noted that while oil related gains are playing a major role, corporate tax weakness suggests firms are still adjusting to inflation, currency volatility, and higher input costs.

Quality of Revenue: Otunba Dele Oye, Chairman of Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics, argues that Nigeria must now move beyond celebrating the quantity of collections and focus on how effectively the revenue is utilized to deliver tangible economic and social benefits.
