Students in Tech, a new nationwide community platform designed to connect Nigerian students with careers, funding, mentorship, and opportunities in the country’s technology ecosystem, has officially launched, with the goal of bridging the gap between campus talent and industry opportunity.
The initiative, established by TechMedia Africa, one of Africa’s fastest-growing technology media platforms, is an ongoing community for students in universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education.
Through the platform, students will receive mentorship, career guidance, and access to opportunities across high-demand technology fields, including software engineering, data analytics, product design, project management, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence engineering.
It also provides a dedicated platform for students who are already building startups or developing innovative technology ideas to access grants, startup funding, accelerator and incubation programmes, fellowship opportunities, founder mentorship, and industry exposure through TechMedia Africa’s ecosystem and partner network.
“Students in Tech is about creating a structured pathway for students who are already building, learning, and innovating, but often lack access to the networks, mentorship, and opportunities that can accelerate their journey,” said Obianyimuo Nchedo Annastasia, Students in Tech Project & Community Operations Manager.
Addressing Nigeria’s growing digital skills challenge
The launch comes at a time when Nigeria’s digital economy is expanding rapidly. The sector is projected to contribute more than $18 billion to the economy by the end of 2026, yet the country faces a significant shortage of digitally skilled talent.
Recent projections show that Nigeria’s labour force will require 28 million digitally skilled workers by 2030, while an IFC and World Bank report estimates that 230 million jobs across Sub-Saharan Africa will require digital skills by 2030.
At the same time, Nigeria produces approximately 600,000 graduates every year, many of whom struggle with unemployment or underemployment despite growing opportunities in technology.
TechMedia Africa believes that one of the country’s greatest untapped advantages lies within its tertiary education system, which is estimated to have more than 2.5 million students across universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education.
Students in Tech is designed to close the gap between technical skills, industry exposure, and access to opportunities by focusing directly on students while they are still in school.
Building a technology community across Nigerian campuses
Students in Tech is a long-term community platform built around two core pillars — Student Professionals and Student Founders — reflecting the different pathways students take into the technology ecosystem.
Student Professionals: For students pursuing careers in technology, Student Professionals provides access to technical training, mentorship, job and internship opportunities, gig opportunities, CV and portfolio reviews, interview preparation, career guidance, and industry networking. Members will be supported in building careers across software engineering, data analytics, product design, project management, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technology fields.
Student Founders: For students already building startups or exploring entrepreneurial ideas, Student Founders provides access to grants, startup funding opportunities, accelerator programmes, fellowship opportunities, incubation programmes, founder mentorship, startup storytelling through TechMedia Africa, and networking across Nigeria’s startup ecosystem.
