Imagine dating someone you love, but every time he goes out with his friends, you end up regretting it. Would you ask him to choose between you and them? 👀
Let me tell you a story.
Chiamaka and David had been dating for almost two years.
David was a good man.
He was caring, hardworking, and always made an effort to make her happy.
But there was one thing Chiamaka struggled with.
His friends.
Whenever David went out with them, he came back late.
Sometimes, he spent more money than they had planned.
Other times, he came home with stories that made Chiamaka uncomfortable.
One evening, David told her he was going out with his friends.
"Please, don't stay out too late," she said.
"I won't," he replied.
But that night, he came home around 2 a.m.
Chiamaka was still awake.
"David, where have you been?"
"I told you I was with my friends."
"I know, but you said you wouldn't stay out late."
"So now I can't spend time with my friends?"
She sighed.
"That's not what I'm saying."
But the argument had already started.
A few days later, Chiamaka tried to explain herself.
"I don't have a problem with your friends. I just don't like how things change whenever you're with them."
David looked at her.
"They've been my friends for years. You can't just come into my life and start deciding who I can be around."
That statement hurt her.
Because she wasn't trying to control him.
She just wanted him to understand that his choices affected their relationship too.
Then one day, something happened.
David's friends invited him to a weekend trip.
He had promised Chiamaka they would spend that weekend together because she had been having a difficult time.
But when the invitation came, he cancelled their plans.
"It's just one weekend," he said.
Chiamaka looked at him.
"But you already promised me."
"You're making this bigger than it is."
And that was when she realised something.
Maybe the problem wasn't really his friends.
Maybe it was the fact that David kept making decisions that left her feeling like she came second.
She didn't want to be the woman who said, "You can't go out."
She wanted to be the woman whose feelings mattered when he made plans.
And honestly, that's where things get complicated.
Because your partner should have friends.
But your partner should also know how to balance friendship with commitment.
Now, let's talk.
If you were Chiamaka, would you ask David to spend less time with his friends, or would you simply ask him to respect the plans you already made together?
And if you were David, would you feel controlled, or would you understand why your girlfriend was upset?
Because let's be honest...
Should your partner's friends influence your decision to marry them?
Or is it enough to judge your partner by their own character and actions?
I really want to hear different perspectives on this one.
Have you ever dated someone whose friends made you uncomfortable? What happened? 👇🏽
