Going to Onitsha is almost like preparing to enter a very busy city like Lagos. You have to be alert, careful, and ready for the fast pace of the environment. I visited the city to buy some camping items, and the experience was one I will not forget.
The moment you arrive at the famous Onitsha Main Market, you immediately notice how lively and crowded the place is. Traders from different parts of Nigeria come here to buy goods in bulk.
The market is filled with shops and stalls selling all kinds of items, clothes, bags, household goods, and much more. At some points, the clothes displayed by traders almost cover the walkways, making it easy for someone to lose their way if they are not familiar with the area.
Before entering the market, I was warned to be very careful with my phone. Someone told me that you could be inside a car answering a call, and a person outside might quickly snatch the phone from your hand. That warning alone made me hold my belongings tightly throughout my visit.
While moving deeper into the market, I almost missed my way because of how large and busy the place is. Every corner seemed to lead to another line of traders and customers bargaining loudly.
One interesting part of the market I visited was Ochanja Market. The lane I entered was strictly for shoes. You can literally find every kind of shoe you can think of, sandals, sneakers, corporate shoes, and even unique styles you may not easily see elsewhere.
Despite the crowd and the need to stay alert, I truly enjoyed the experience. The energy of the traders, the variety of goods, and the movement of people from different states make the market very fascinating.
However, one important thing anyone visiting Onitsha markets should remember is this: be very careful with your belongings. If you are not alert, you might end up going back home without them.
My trip to Onitsha was exciting, eye-opening, and a reminder that some markets in Nigeria are not just places to buy goods, they are experiences on their own.
