I’ve used both public and private hospitals in Nigeria, and the difference isn’t subtle at all.
In a public hospital, the first thing you notice is the wait. Long queues, multiple counters, and sometimes you’re not even sure who is handling your case. But the upside is cost. Consultation and treatment can be heavily subsidized, especially in teaching or government hospitals.
Private hospitals feel like the opposite world. You walk in and things move faster. You see a doctor quicker, tests are done faster, and communication is usually clearer. But the trade-off is price. Even basic consultations and lab tests can stack up quickly.
This is what I’ve noticed from my personal experience:
Public hospitals
• More affordable care
• Skilled doctors, especially in teaching hospitals
• Longer waiting times and higher patient volume
• Limited comfort and sometimes equipment delays
Private hospitals
• Faster service and shorter waiting time
• Cleaner environment and more structured processes
• Higher cost for everything, even basic care
• Better patient experience overall, especially for emergencies
