You can know Abuja very well and still get this wrong.
Aso Rock and Zuma Rock are two of the most recognisable rocks in Nigeria, but there is something interesting about where they actually are.
Aso Rock is in the Federal Capital Territory, right around Nigeria’s centre of political power.
Zuma Rock is different.
It is in Niger State, around Madalla, along the Abuja Kaduna highway.
So, if you are travelling on the Abuja Kaduna route, Zuma Rock is one of those landmarks you cannot easily miss around the Abuja approach.
But if you are coming into Abuja through another route, you are obviously not going to see Zuma Rock.
That is one reason calling it simply an Abuja landmark can be a little misleading.
It is close to Abuja and strongly associated with the capital, but geographically, it belongs to Niger State.
And there is another interesting detail.
Zuma Rock is often described as a gateway to Abuja because of its position along the major route connecting the capital with Kaduna and the northern part of the country.
Aso Rock, meanwhile, has become deeply connected with the Nigerian government because of what surrounds it.
So when we put Aso Rock and Zuma Rock side by side, we are not really looking at two identical landmarks.
One became a symbol of political power.
The other became a powerful natural marker on one of the major approaches to the capital.
Two rocks.
Two locations.
Two completely different stories.
And that is what makes the comparison interesting.
