Sometimes an opportunity looks like growth simply because it sounds better than where you are. A bigger name. A more exciting space. Something that feels closer to your dream. It automatically feels like an upgrade.
During my NYSC, I was posted to a Postgraduate College in a prestigious university. It was structured and calm. I handled files and administrative duties. But in my head, I wanted radio. I wanted something expressive. Something that felt aligned with passion.
Four days in, a colleague at the radio station forfeited their spot and even recommended me. It felt like the perfect shift. I left the PG school almost immediately because, to me, this was growth. This was the upgrade.
I am still in radio. And I still dislike it. Writing this is even giving me a headache, quite literally. The environment has been draining: constant pressure, subtle hostility, and what is often framed as mentorship but feels more like bullying. And now, the opportunity to leave is no longer forthcoming.
That experience has forced me to understand something deeply, not every opportunity that excites you will elevate you. Sometimes what looks like progress is just movement. Growth is not about chasing what seems glamorous; it is about choosing what sustains your peace. And next time, I will measure differently.
