The Nigerian Naira started 2026 on a positive note, gaining value against the US Dollar, British Pound, and Euro in the official foreign exchange market.

-Against the Dollar: Naira rose by N4.91 to N1,430.85/$1
-Against the Pound: Up N8.47 to N1,925.78/£1
-Against the Euro: Increased N9.64 to N1,678.24/€1

Even in the black market, the Naira strengthened:
Dollar sales dropped to N1,475/$1 from N1,480
At GTBank, it improved by N17 to N1,435/$1

Why this is happening:
-Demand for foreign currency eased at the start of the year.

-Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) reforms aim to make the FX market more efficient and transparent, reducing the gap between official and black market rates.

-Improved domestic oil refining could reduce the need for fuel imports, easing pressure on foreign currency demand.

-Nigeria’s external reserves are expected to rise to $51.04 billion in 2026, up from $45 billion in 2025, thanks to higher oil earnings, bond sales, and remittances.

Inflation outlook:
-The CBN expects inflation to slow to 12.94% in 2026 and 10.75% in 2027, which could help reduce the cost of living over time.

Crypto update:
-Ripple (XRP) briefly rose above $2, Dogecoin (DOGE) +9.1%, Cardano (ADA) +7.9%, Litecoin (LTC) +2.5%, Solana (SOL) +2.4%

-Ethereum (ETH) +1.8%, Binance Coin (BNB) +0.7%, Bitcoin (BTC) +0.6%

-reforms and rising reserves suggest more stability in the currency over the year.

-Crypto investors may see opportunities as major coins start the year on an upward trend.

-Positive momentum came from ETF inflows and a more crypto-friendly regulatory outlook in the US.

Why this matters to you:
A stronger Naira means imported goods, services, and travel could become slightly cheaper.
