Continuation…
A long story.
.
If you have been following my hair drama, you already know I have a complicated relationship with my hair 😅
A very complicated one 😄
After barbing it in 2021, I eventually started growing it again in 2022. Slowly, patiently, strand by strand. Before I knew it, my hair was full again. Thick. Heavy. Everywhere.
People loved it.
Compliments were flying around like confetti.
“Your hair is so full.”
“I wish I had your kind of hair.”
“Do you know how lucky you are?”
"What are you using on your hair?"
"I'm jealous about your hair girl. I love it."
Lucky?
Meanwhile, I was tired.
My hair is very full. When I say full, I mean FULL. Packing it alone can feel like a workout session. Holding it in one place is stress. Combing it is another assignment entirely. I spend more than an hour on my hair alone each time I'm preparing to go out if I'm not on braid. Sometimes, I would stand in front of the mirror wondering why my head carries this much responsibility 😄
Still, I kept plaiting it and managing it.
Then October 2023 happened.
I woke up one day and decided to go skin.
Not low cut. Not small trim. Skin.
As in, nothing left 😀😀
Even the barber was laughing at me. He kept looking at my head and laughing as he shaved everything off. If you saw me that day, you would think I lost a bet.
My main reason this time around was dandruff. I had convinced myself that if I shaved everything, treated my scalp properly, the dandruff would disappear.
Guess what?
It did not work.
Till today, I am still battling dandruff 😑
A very strong one.
So imagine going fully bald, shocking your friends and everyone, and the problem you were trying to solve is still standing there, smiling at you.
Life has a sense of humor.
But if I am being honest, dandruff was not the only reason. There is something about barbing my hair that makes me feel light and free. It feels refreshing. It feels like starting over. And I tell myself, hair will always grow back. Hair no dey finish 😄.
I love when I make my hair. The new look. The beautiful face. Yet, I desire to barb my hair sometimes.
No be JuJu be that 😃
The funny part is this.
While I am here getting tired of my thick, stubborn, heavy hair, some people are praying for exactly what I have. They admire it. They wish for it. They compliment it every day.
Meanwhile, sometimes I wish for soft, light, easy-to-manage hair 😒
This life is funny.
The person with full hair wants less.
The person with small hair wants more.
Balance where? 😅
If there is one thing this hair journey has taught me, it is that we often struggle with the very things others admire about us. What feels like stress to you might be someone else’s prayer point.
So now I just embrace the phases.
Grow it.
Cut it.
Plait it.
Shave it.
At the end of the day, it is just hair. And every phase comes with its own story.
This picture was taken in May 2023, five months before I went skin. It was the second hair I grew and kept, yet I wiped it off again.
To be continued.
Tell me, have you ever cut your hair drastically and shocked everyone around you? Or are you part of the “I can never barb my hair” gang? 😄
