If you look at this highway bridge in Guangzhou, you will see a tiny, run-down house stuck right in the middle of traffic.

In China, these are called "Nail Houses."

The term comes from a Chinese pun describing a stubborn nail that is hammered into wood and refuses to be pulled out. It refers to homeowners who refuse to make way for development, hoping for a bigger payout.

And the owner of this house, Huang Ping, is the ultimate nail.

When the government planned to bulldoze his neighborhood to build this expressway, every other neighbor moved out.

But Huang refused. He turned down a compensation package of $220,000 and two new apartments, believing that if he held out, the developers would get desperate and offer him millions.

He was wrong.

Instead of negotiating, they simply changed the blueprints. They paved the bridge directly around his property, effectively trapping him in a concrete pit. He had to enter his home through a massive pipe in the side of the highway.

Now, cars zoom past his bedroom window 24 hours a day, and his front yard is a highway median.

While the internet called him a rebel, Huang recently admitted the sad truth. He said in an interview, "If I could turn back time, I would take the money. I gambled and I lost."
