The town was founded in the mid-17th century by Ogunlola, a hunter and warrior. The name comes from “Eyi ti Ogbori Elemoso,” meaning “the place of Ogbori Elemoso” (referring to a warrior feat), later contracted to Ogbomoso.
Originally a small settlement, it grew rapidly as a walled town that provided refuge for neighboring populations during 19th-century conflicts, especially the Fulani wars.
After the decline of the old Oyo Empire, Ogbomoso aligned with Ibadan and became a significant regional center.
