I know this might sound strange to many Nigerians who have never left the country, but I’m genuinely frustrated with my life in the U.S. I moved here in 2016 as a student to pursue a master’s in engineering, and after about seven years, I obtained a U.S. Green Card. I now work a middle-income government job and live here with my Nigerian husband.
Since moving, I’ve faced multiple health challenges—some resolved, others new. Recently, I’ve been dealing with depression and extreme fatigue. I’m on antidepressants, but I still feel frustrated and down. My job isn’t very demanding, yet my health prevents me from hustling or achieving more, which adds to my frustration.
Life here can be lonely. It’s just me and my husband, and making meaningful friendships is difficult because people tend to keep to themselves. I’ve thought about returning to Nigeria since life in America hasn’t met my expectations, but my husband prefers staying here and reminds me of the tough job situation back home. We also don’t have children yet.
I didn’t grow up wealthy—everything I have is from my own efforts. We recently bought a house on a 30-year mortgage, which feels overwhelming given my current state. I’m looking for advice from anyone with experience, as I feel stuck and isolated. Please, no insults. I just need guidance.
