I moved to Abuja from the east and quickly realised that good Igbo food was something I wasn’t ready to live without. After plenty of sampling, here are the real spots where you can get legit Igbo cuisine in Abuja:
- Jevinik Restaurant, Wuse 2
This was one of my first safe places. Anytime I was craving proper soup, Jevinik delivered. Oha that actually tastes like oha, egusi with flavour, white soup that doesn’t feel watered down. Plenty swallow options too. It’s reliable and consistent.
- Coal City Buka, Gwarinpa and Life Camp
This one holds a special place in my heart. If you’re from the East, you’ll understand. Fiofio, ukwa, oha, nkwobi, isi-ewu. Everything tastes intentional. This is the place I take people when I want them to understand Igbo food properly.
- Abacha Villa
I’m not exaggerating when I say I fell in love here. Their abacha and ugba are that good. The kind you eat quietly and start nodding your head halfway through. Every time I go, I remind myself why I keep coming back.
- Okonkwo by Papiee’s, Jahi
This place has energy. They serve Igbo and South-South food with vibes. The atmosphere is lively, the food is rich, and it’s one of those places you can go with friends and lose track of time.
- NativeSpot Restaurant and Bar, Kubwa
If you love nkwobi, this place will not disappoint you. Properly spiced, well done, and best enjoyed with palm wine. It’s not fancy, but it hits the spot.
- Rafia Palms Restaurant, Garki
This one surprised me. Onunu, nkwobi, isi-ewu. Afrocentric and very intentional. You can tell they respect the food they serve.
- Igbo Restaurant, Gwarinpa
This spot is very traditional. They serve really good Igbo meals.
