Place: Millennium Park

If you’re visiting Abuja for the first time, there are plenty of places you could put on your itinerary. But if I had to insist on one place you shouldn’t leave Abuja without visiting, it would be Millennium Park.

Because Abuja isn’t only about impressive buildings, busy roads and the business of being Nigeria’s capital. There’s also a quieter, greener side to the city—and Millennium Park gives you a chance to experience it.

Located in the Maitama area, Millennium Park is Abuja’s largest public park. The park was inaugurated in 2003 and was designed around landscaped green spaces, gardens and areas showcasing different types of Nigerian vegetation.  

Why I think it’s worth visiting:

1. It’s a completely different side of Abuja.

If your experience of Abuja has mostly been driving around the city, visiting restaurants, shopping or attending meetings, Millennium Park gives you a chance to slow down.

There are green spaces, walking areas and places where you can simply sit and enjoy the surroundings. The Nigerian Heritage tourism listing also highlights the park’s fountains, gardens, birds, tennis courts and picnic areas.  

2. It’s great for a relaxed day out.

You don’t need to plan an elaborate activity.

You can go for a walk, have a picnic, take photographs, spend time with friends or simply sit somewhere peaceful for a while.

That’s one of the things I like about it: you can make the visit as active or as lazy as you want.

3. It’s a good place to actually appreciate Abuja’s greenery.

Abuja has a reputation for being one of Nigeria’s greener major cities, and Millennium Park is a nice way for a first-time visitor to experience that aspect of the capital.

The park’s design includes different vegetation environments, including savanna, rainforest and other plant zones.

Don’t rush your visit.

If you’re going there purely to take a few pictures and leave, you’re missing part of the experience.

Give yourself enough time to walk around, find a comfortable spot and actually enjoy the environment.

And if you’re planning a picnic, bring what you need with you rather than assuming you’ll find everything you want inside the park. Recent local visitor information also notes that the park can become busier on weekends.  

So, would I recommend it?

Absolutely—especially if this is your first time in Abuja and you want somewhere that gives you a taste of the city’s calmer side.

I have visited the park severally to either have an alone time or solo picnic date. I really enjoy the serenity of the park when I also visit with friends. 

You don’t have to spend a fortune or plan an entire day around it.

Sometimes, the best way to experience a city is simply to find somewhere beautiful, sit down and watch the city breathe.

And Millennium Park is a good place to start. 🇳🇬
