When I first decided to learn data analysis, I had zero experience. No statistics background, no advanced math skills, and no idea how dashboards were built. All I had was curiosity. Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t wait until I “felt ready” because the truth is, you don’t need to feel ready to start.
The first thing I did was change my mindset. I stopped seeing data analysis as something only mathematicians or tech geniuses could do. I started seeing it as problem-solving with numbers. Data analysis is really about asking questions and using data to answer them. Once I understood that, it felt less intimidating.
I began with Excel. Not because it’s the most powerful tool, but because it’s accessible and beginner-friendly. I learned how to sort data, filter rows, use basic formulas like SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, and create pivot tables. At first, it felt simple almost too simple. But those basics built my confidence. I practiced with small datasets I found online. I would ask myself questions like:
* Which month had the highest sales?
* Which product performed best?
* What is the average revenue?
Those small exercises trained my thinking.
