When it was time for me to register for NYSC, I was honestly overwhelmed. Everyone around me had advice, but nobody explained it clearly from start to finish. I made a few mistakes I wish I had avoided, so I’m breaking this down the exact way I experienced it, step by step.
Step 1: I checked if I was actually eligible
Before doing anything, I confirmed two things:
• I was under 30 at the time of graduation
• My school had uploaded my name on the NYSC senate list
If your name is not on the senate list, stop there. You can’t register yet, no matter what anyone tells you.
Step 2: I waited for NYSC to officially open the portal
Once registration opened, I went straight to the official NYSC website: nysc.gov.ng. I avoided random links because fake sites are everywhere during NYSC season.
What I had ready:
• A working email address
• My phone number (very important)
NYSC uses these two for almost everything later.
Step 3: I created my NYSC profile
I signed up with my email and created a password. After that, I filled in my personal details exactly the way they appeared on my school records. I didn’t try to be smart or “correct” anything myself.
Lesson I learnt:
If your name or date of birth is wrong here, you’ll suffer for it at camp.
Step 4: Passport photo and biometric capture
This part stressed me.
• I uploaded a clear passport photograph with a white background
• No filters, no editing
• Then I did fingerprint capture on the portal
My phone didn’t work well, so I switched to a laptop and it went smoothly.
Step 5: I selected my preferred states
NYSC asked me to choose four states where I’d like to serve, excluding:
• My state of origin
• My state of residence
This doesn’t mean you’ll be posted there, but you must select them.
Step 6: I confirmed if I was applying for exemption
I wasn’t exempted, so I skipped this part.
But if you’re above 30 or did a part-time programme, this is where it applies to you.
Step 7: I made the payment and printed my green card
I paid the registration fee directly on the portal.
After payment:
• I printed my green card immediately
This green card is very important. Don’t joke with it. You’ll need it at orientation camp.
Step 8: I waited for my call-up letter
After registration closed, NYSC announced when call-up letters were ready. I logged back into the portal and printed mine.
The call-up letter shows:
• Your state of deployment
• Orientation camp address
• Reporting date
One thing I wish someone told me earlier
Don’t rush and don’t let just anyone handle your registration. Most NYSC problems come from small mistakes made during registration.
If you’re about to register, take your time. NYSC registration feels stressful at first, but once you understand the steps, it’s manageable.
