For many Nigerian graduates, the job interview is the most stressful part of the job search. You may have the certificate, the skills, and the motivation but without proper preparation, it’s easy to underperform. The good news is that interview success is highly trainable.
Start with research. Don’t walk into any interview blind. Learn about the company, what they do, their services, and their values. Check their website and social media pages. Many Nigerian employers ask simple questions like “What do you know about us?” and your answer immediately shows your seriousness.
Next, prepare your story. As a graduate, you may not have much job experience, so focus on internships, NYSC experience, school projects, volunteer work, and leadership roles. Be ready to explain what you did, what you learned, and the results you achieved.
Practice common interview questions. Examples include:
-Tell us about yourself
-Why should we hire you?
-What are your strengths and weaknesses?
-Describe a challenge you handled
Practice your answers out loud not just in your head. Confidence grows with repetition.
Appearance also matters. Dress neat and simple. You don’t need expensive clothes just clean, well-fitted, and professional. Arrive early if it’s a physical interview. If it’s virtual, test your internet, camera, and audio beforehand.
Bring the right documents: copies of your CV, certificates, ID, and portfolio if relevant. Keep them organized in a simple folder.
Finally, prepare questions to ask. It shows maturity and interest. Ask about the role, growth opportunities, or team structure.
