Making friends outside social media these days is not as easy as people make it sound. Because now everything is online. Most people meet on Instagram, Twitter, or somewhere else first before they even talk in real life.
But it is still possible, you just need to give it a try.
For instance, leave your house sometimes. I know this one sounds obvious, but it’s true. If you’re always at home scrolling, who exactly are you trying to meet? Even if it’s small things. Go buy food, sit down somewhere, go to the gym, attend one random event in Lagos. You’ll see people.
Another thing is to talk to people you already see around you. That person you always see at the bus stop. Someone at the gym you’ve been making eye contact with for weeks, but nobody is talking. Even your neighbour sef. Sometimes all it takes is just “good evening” and a small gist.
And Lagos people like to gist. Once a conversation starts like this, it can go anywhere.
You can also join groups. Church groups, gym classes, volunteering, football viewing centres, anything where people gather regularly. If you keep seeing the same people, one day you guys will talk. It just happens.
And sometimes it’s just very random. You’re inside a danfo complaining about traffic with someone, next thing, both of you are laughing and talking like you’ve known each other before.
But honestly, not every conversation will turn into a friendship. Some people you’ll just talk to once, and that’s it.
But once in a while, one person will stick. And before you know it, that’s your guy now. That’s usually how real friendships start. Just normal life… and two people talking.
