Valentine’s Day in Lagos can be really tough on single people and if you’re not careful, you could actually die from jealousy.

Single people usually resort to staying home and watching other people surprise their partners with valentines gifts. Some people even become relationship detectives, analysing gifts and arguing about whether a bouquet is real or not.

Here are less sad and depressing ways you can celebrate Valentine’s Day this year:

1. Turn your house into a comfort zone
There’s no need to torture yourself by going on a solo date on valentines day. Restaurants are fully booked, everyone is coupled up and you’ll just be sitting there… alone. One wrong glance and you’re fighting tears over someone else’s bouquet.

Instead, order food you actually love, wear your most comfortable clothes and light a candle if you want to. Relax and enjoy your house rent.

2. Watch movies that won’t emotionally attack you
This is not the day for romantic films.
Choose comedy, action, crime, or old Nollywood where love was already stressful.

3. Talk to people who actually like you
Call your friends. Send voice notes. Laugh. Gist.
Do not call your ex. Valentine’s Day is not for character development.

4. Host a “come as you are” hangout
Invite one or two close friends. Something casual. Everyone brings snacks or drinks. You sit, gist, eat, and drag the day and before you know it, it’s midnight and valentines is over.

5. Do something oddly productive
Clean your room. Rearrange your space. Do laundry. Nothing heals the spirit like folding clothes while minding your business. This way, you won’t even have time to check social media.

6. Log off strategically
You don’t need to see every surprise proposal and hotel decoration.
Mute. Close apps. Protect your mental health. Valentine’s Day expires in 24 hours.

7. Sleep early
Yes. Sleep.
While people are outside fighting traffic and noise, you’re in bed, moisturised, unbothered, and at peace.

Valentine’s Day will pass and Lagos will still be Lagos. You don’t need to perform sadness or force enjoyment. Just do what keeps you calm, fed, and stress free.
