Many of us spend hours each day looking at phones, computers and other screens. After a long stretch, your eyes may feel dry or tired, and the words on the screen may become harder to focus on. Simple changes to how you use your screen can help you stay comfortable.
Take a short break every 20 minutes. Look at something about 6 metres away for 20 seconds before you return to the screen. You can do this while working, studying or using your phone. Also, remind yourself to blink. People often blink less fully when they focus on a screen, which can leave their eyes feeling dry.
Make your screen easy to see. Increase the text size if you find yourself squinting or leaning forward. Set the brightness to suit the light in the room, and move lamps or adjust the screen if you see glare. Keep the screen at a comfortable distance and, when possible, a little below eye level. Small changes to your chair or screen position can make a long session feel easier.
Notice how your eyes feel during and after screen use. If dryness, blurred vision or eye pain keeps coming back, speak with an eye care professional. You do not have to change all your habits in one day. Start by taking regular breaks, then adjust your screen and room until you find a setup that feels right for you.
