Saving money as a student can feel almost impossible, especially when transport, food, data and unexpected expenses keep showing up.

One thing that helped me understand saving is this: don't wait until you have "enough money" before saving. Start with what you have.

For example, if you receive ₦20,000, don't automatically spend the entire ₦20,000.

Try separating it immediately:

• Needs — ₦12,000
• Savings — ₦4,000
• Data/communication — ₦2,000
• Emergency/miscellaneous — ₦2,000

The exact amounts don't matter as much as creating the habit.

Another important rule: don't save money you know you will need tomorrow. Budget your needs first, then save what you can realistically leave untouched.

And please don't feel bad if you can only save ₦500 or ₦1,000 at a time.

Small savings become meaningful when you are consistent.

The goal isn't to look rich.

The goal is to avoid being completely broke when an unexpected expense comes.
