When I first thought about starting a skincare brand, I had no idea where to begin. TikTok made it look easy, but reality here in Nigeria is different. Here’s what I learned the hard way:
1. Make a decision
Before worrying about suppliers, products, or logos, I had to commit. I asked myself: What problem am I solving? Who am I serving? That mindset made every other step easier.
2. Study Other Brands, Don’t Copy
I spent hours on Instagram and TikTok looking at local brands. I watched how they priced their products, created content, and talked to customers. I didn’t copy, I took notes and improved on what I saw.
3. Find Reliable Suppliers Early
I started reaching out to suppliers before even selling my first product. Fast responses, consistent stock, and quality ingredients made the difference when my first orders came in.
4. Share Your Journey
People buy from people they trust. I posted my packaging process, my wins, and yes, even my mistakes. Being honest built a small but loyal community around my brand.
5. Show Social Proof
Once I got my first happy customers, I shared before-and-after results and testimonials. Seeing real results made new customers confident to buy.
6. Show Up Even Small
I didn’t have a shop or hundreds of orders at first. But I posted like I did. Daily updates, content about shipping, tutorials, tips. Confidence sells, even if you’re just starting.
Starting a skincare business in Nigeria is not easy, but it is possible. The key is commitment, consistency, and trust.
