After graduation, I kept hearing the same thing:
“You need connection to get a good job in Nigeria.”

The truth? I didn’t have any.

No uncle in a big office.
No family friend in HR.
Just my CV, my phone, and determination.

The first 3 months were frustrating. I applied to over 40 jobs. No reply. Some didn’t even acknowledge my application.

Instead of giving up, I did three things:

1️⃣ I Reworked My CV
I stopped listing only responsibilities and started highlighting results.
Even my NYSC experience became valuable when I showed impact.

2️⃣ I Built Skills Online
I took free online courses, improved my communication skills, and learned basic digital tools. I made sure I could confidently say, “Yes, I can do that.”

3️⃣ I Applied Strategically
Instead of randomly sending CVs, I tailored each application to the job description. I also followed company pages and applied early.

Then one random Tuesday, I got an email.
Interview.

I prepared like my life depended on it. Researched the company. Practiced common questions. Showed confidence even when I was nervous.

Two days later, I got the call.

No, connections are helpful.
But competence + preparation + consistency can open doors too.

Your first job might not be your dream job — mine wasn’t.
But it gave me experience, confidence, and proof that I could start from somewhere.

If you’re currently job hunting without who you know, don’t lose hope.

What skill are you currently improving while waiting for your opportunity?
