Before video editing, I was a virtual assistant.

I handled small tasks for people. Emails, scheduling, random admin work. I was reliable, efficient, and always delivered. But at the end of the month, the money still didn’t stretch far enough.

I didn’t have anyone backing me financially. No safety net. I had been fending for myself for a long time, so I knew one thing clearly. I needed to earn more, not just work harder.

One random day, I saw a job posting.
Someone was looking for a video editor and was willing to pay $1,000.

I laughed first.
Then I assumed it was a scam.

Out of curiosity, I still applied.

We had an interview, and that was when I realized it wasn’t a scam. She was legit. A well known YouTuber based in Poland.

There was just one problem.

I barely knew how to edit videos.

At that point, I had two options. Walk away quietly or take a risk that scared me. I chose the second one.

I went straight to YouTube.
Tutorial after tutorial. Late nights. Practice clips. Mistakes. Re-edits. I learnt Premiere Pro like my rent depended on it, because honestly, it did.

Was it risky? Absolutely.
Was I scared of embarrassing myself? Yes.
Did I need that money badly enough to try anyway? Also yes.

I got the job.

That one opportunity changed everything. I didn’t just learn video editing, I got good at it. Then better. Then confident. One client led to another. Referrals started coming in. People began to associate my name with quality work.

Today, video editing pays my bills in Lagos. It gave me options. It gave me breathing room. It gave me proof that learning a high value skill can change your life faster than you think.
