Move to Germany without a job offer?

But I decided to research it properly and here’s what I found out, step by step.

1. First, I Checked If I Even Qualified

The Opportunity Card is points based. You don’t just apply because you feel like relocating.

They look at things like:

 • Your educational qualification

 • Work experience

 • Age

 • German or English language skills

 • Financial proof

If you have a recognized degree or vocational qualification, that already gives you a strong advantage.

Before doing anything, I checked if my degree was recognized in Germany. That part is very important.

2. The Money Part

You must show proof that you can support yourself while job hunting in Germany.

From Nigeria, this usually means:

 • Opening a blocked account

 • Or showing a formal sponsorship

 • Or part time job contract (if applicable)

Without proof of funds, your application will not move forward.

Don’t wait till the last minute to arrange this.

3. Gathering My Documents

This part required patience.

I needed:

 • Valid international passport

 • Degree certificate

 • Transcript

 • CV formatted to German standard

 • Language certificate (if available)

 • Proof of funds

 • Health insurance

 • Completed visa application form

Everything had to be properly arranged. Germany is very strict with documentation.

4. Booking My Appointment

From Nigeria, applications go through the German Embassy or Consulate.

Getting an appointment can take time, so once my documents were ready, I booked early.

At the interview, they asked about:

 • My qualifications

 • My work experience

 • My plans in Germany

 • How I intend to support myself

You need to be clear and confident about your plans.

5. After Arrival in Germany

The Opportunity Card allows you to:

 • Stay for up to one year

 • Search for a job

 • Work part time while searching

But nobody tells you that the job market is competitive.

If you don’t speak German, your options reduce significantly outside tech and some international roles.

Learning German before relocating will increase your chances massively.

6. What I Wish Someone Told Me

The Opportunity Card is not a shortcut. It’s an opportunity.

You still need:

 • Skills that are in demand

 • A strong CV

 • Patience

 • Adaptability

Relocating without preparation can frustrate you quickly.
