Not every alarm is danger, but try explain that to a Nigerian holding phone and bag
So one day like that, we had a fire drill where I was doing a training at Jibowu, Lagos.
Heh. Come and see drama.
I was just on my way to the restroom when I heard the alarm go off, loud like NEPA transformer exploding.
Kia! My heart jump.
I ran back to my seat, grabbed my bag, then remembered my phone was still charging under the table. I quickly bent down, unplugged it with the charger, stuffed it inside my bag, and started heading for the exit.
One of the firemen was shouting, “Drop your bags and phones! Walk calmly!”
In my mind, I said, “Who go buy another phone for me if this fire real?”
Apparently, I wasn’t alone.
People were running with bags, laptops, and even food flasks. Imagine, food flask! During fire!
I just looked around and sighed. Àní àjẹ́kù kò mọ̀ pé ina àná ló ńjó. (Even leftovers don’t realize the fire is still burning in the fireplace.)
Nobody wanted to walk “calmly” like they were told. Even me, I won’t lie, I joined the marathon small. I ran, pushed one or two people on the stairs, survival instinct no get etiquette.
In the end, we discovered it was only a drill.
People started laughing, panting, pretending like they knew all along. I just held my bag tight, shame and relief mixing like custard and cold water.
But honestly, I learned something that day.
When danger show face, human instinct go first shout “save your belongings!” before brain remember “save your life.”
Moral of the Story:
When fire dey chase you, phone no go follow you enter heaven.
