In most cases, URTIs are mild and improve within one to two weeks. Treatment is usually focused on relieving symptoms. Adequate rest, drinking plenty of fluids, warm drinks, saline nasal drops, and appropriate fever or pain relief can help. Antibiotics are generally not effective against viral infections and should not be used unless a healthcare professional confirms or strongly suspects a bacterial infection.
