Comparison Almost Stole My Joy
There was a time I genuinely believed everyone else was ahead of me.
Someone was already building a business.
Someone had mastered a skill I was just beginning to learn.
Someone had better grades.
Someone seemed more confident.
More talented.
More put together.
And there I was...
Wondering if I had somehow missed the memo on how to become an adult.
The funny thing about comparison is that it doesn't always scream.
Sometimes it whispers.
"You're behind."
"You should be doing more."
"Look at them."
For a while, I listened.
I celebrated other people's progress while quietly dismissing my own.
Every small step I took felt insignificant because someone else had already taken ten.
But one day, something changed.
I realized I wasn't actually losing because someone else was winning.
I was losing because I had stopped seeing my own growth.
I forgot that everyone starts somewhere.
I forgot that the person I was comparing myself to also had a beginning nobody applauded.
Now, I'm learning to celebrate progress, even when it feels small.
Because every chapter has a first page.
Every tree was once a seed.
And every person you admire once felt like a beginner.
I'm still finding my feet.
Some days are harder than others.
But I'm learning to measure my journey against who I was yesterday, not who someone else is today.
Maybe that's what growth really looks like.
Not becoming someone else.
But slowly becoming yourself.
Have you ever caught yourself comparing your journey to someone else's? What helped you move past it?
Aven
See you in the next chapter. 🌿
