You may have seen these tiny yellowish-brown seeds in local markets, food stores or sitting in someone's kitchen.
But beyond the traditional ways people use fenugreek, what do we actually know about it?
Fenugreek is a plant whose seeds and leaves are used as food and in traditional medicine. 🌿
The seeds contain fibre, protein and various plant compounds, and fenugreek is used in different parts of the world as a spice and food ingredient.
You may also see fenugreek being talked about online for women's health, especially for things like:
🌸 Breast milk production
🩸 Blood sugar
🍽️ Digestion
🌿 Menstrual symptoms
But here's where we need to be careful.
Just because something is natural doesn't automatically mean it is safe or that it will work for everyone.
Some studies have investigated fenugreek for breastfeeding and blood sugar, but the evidence isn't strong enough to treat fenugreek like a guaranteed medicine.
And those viral claims that fenugreek will automatically increase your breasts, “balance all your hormones,” or fix every menstrual problem? 👀
Please don't take everything you see online as fact.
If you're considering taking fenugreek as a supplement, especially in large amounts, it's worth discussing it with a healthcare professional. It can also cause side effects such as digestive discomfort and may interact with some medicines.
🌿 My takeaway as a women's health educator:
Traditional foods and herbs can be interesting and useful, but we should still ask questions, look at the evidence and avoid using them as a replacement for proper medical care.
Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is simply learn before we consume. 💚
Now I'm curious 👇🏾
