As women, we often talk about eating healthy, but sometimes we forget that some nutritious foods are already part of our local food culture. 👀
Take a look at these two: guinea corn and millet. 🌾
They may look ordinary, but they can contribute important nutrients to a balanced diet.
🩸 Why can they be relevant to women's health?
During menstruation, women lose blood, which means getting enough nutrients especially iron and other nutrients involved in blood production.
🌾 Guinea corn (sorghum) can contribute fibre and minerals, including iron, depending on the variety and how it is prepared.
🌾 Millet also provides fibre and several nutrients, including minerals such as iron and magnesium.
This doesn't mean eating guinea corn or millet alone will “replace blood” or cure anaemia 😭😂. Anaemia has different causes and may require proper testing and treatment.
But including a variety of nutritious foods in your diet can help support your overall nutritional health.
💡 My little tip: Pair plant sources of iron with foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, tomatoes or peppers, as vitamin C can help improve the absorption of non-heme iron from plant foods.
And honestly, this is a reminder that healthy eating doesn't always have to mean buying expensive foreign foods. Sometimes, useful foods are already in our kitchens. 🇳🇬💚
