In recent times, there's been a growing misconception — particularly among Gen Z — that joining Freemasonry or any other secret society is a guaranteed shortcut to wealth and influence.
Social media has played a major role in fueling this narrative, painting secret societies as mysterious, powerful, and financially rewarding. But the truth is far less glamorous.
As someone who has been a member of one such organization — the Knights Templar — I feel compelled to shed light on the reality.
Let me be very clear: joining a secret society will not make you rich.
I personally know many Masons — both Black and White — who are struggling to make ends meet. Some can barely afford their monthly dues. Others are in debt, facing the same economic pressures as everyone else. There is no hidden vault of gold, no secret bank account, and definitely no automatic transfer of wealth.
So where did this idea come from?
A mix of conspiracy theories, misinformed influencers, and the natural human fascination with the unknown. The allure of exclusivity and secrecy makes these organizations appear more powerful than they actually are. But beneath the regalia and rituals, these societies are simply social clubs — with all the human flaws and limitations that come with them.
The Real “Benefit”? Networking.
If there’s any genuine value in joining groups like the Freemasons, Odd Fellows, OES, or Knights Templars, it’s networking. These spaces can connect you with people from diverse professions and walks of life. But even then, your success depends on what you do with those connections, not the mere act of joining.
And here’s the kicker: you don’t need to join a secret society to access strong networks.
You can find equally valuable connections in:
• Church groups
• Professional associations
• Alumni networks
• Business clubs
• Volunteer organizations
These are often more dynamic and inclusive — and, frankly, a lot more engaging.
Why I Left the Knights Templar
After spending years in the organization, I chose to walk away. Not because it was harmful, but simply because it became too boring. It didn’t offer the intellectual, spiritual, or financial growth I was seeking. I realized I could find more fulfilling experiences elsewhere — and I have.
Don’t be deceived by the illusion of “free money” or secret pathways to success. Whether you’re a Gen Z entrepreneur or just someone trying to navigate life, remember this: there is no substitute for working smart, staying focused, and praying for guidance.
Hard work, integrity, and meaningful relationships — that’s the real formula.
