📚 WEEK 2: BUSINESS MODELS — UNDERSTAND HOW MONEY MOVES
🎯 YOU FIT WORK HARD AND STILL REMAIN BROKE
Lagos. 6:15 a.m.
Emeka woke up with a new thought.
Week 1 had changed the way he looked at business.
He had learnt:
CAPITAL NO DEY? LEARN FIRST!
BUSINESS NO BE JUST “BUY & SELL”!
YOUR PROBLEM FIT BECOME YOUR BUSINESS.
WHO DEY BUY FROM YOU?
SALES NO BE PROFIT!
KNOW YOUR NUMBERS BEFORE YOU GROW.
DON'T JUST WORK HARD. LEARN TO WORK SMART.
Now it was Monday.
A new week.
A new question.
Emeka opened his notebook and wrote:
WEEK 2: BUSINESS MODELS
Then he asked himself:
> “If person work hard every day, e mean say money must follow?”
He wasn't so sure anymore.
🕘 9:05 A.M.
Emeka visited a young man who sold snacks and drinks around a busy Lagos area.
The man was already moving around.
He woke up early.
Bought goods.
Carried them around.
Looked for customers.
Collected payments.
Returned home late.
The next morning, he repeated everything.
Emeka watched him for some time.
“Guy, you dey work hard o!”
The man laughed.
“Work hard? I no get choice.”
Emeka asked:
“How much you dey make?”
The man replied:
“Some days good. Some days bad.”
“How much you dey keep after everything?”
The man became quiet.
“I never really know.”
Emeka nodded.
Then he asked:
“If you stop work today, wetin happen tomorrow?”
The man laughed.
“Tomorrow? I go start again.”
Emeka opened his notebook.
He wrote:
WORK → MONEY
Then he added:
STOP WORK → STOP MONEY
He looked at the man.
“See the question wey I dey ask myself.”
🕚 11:20 A.M.
Emeka met Kunle.
“Guy, Week 2 don start.”
Kunle smiled.
“So wetin we dey learn this week?”
“Business models.”
“Business model?”
“Yes.”
“Wetin be that?”
Emeka explained:
“Na the way business creates value, delivers that value to customers and makes money.”
Kunle nodded.
“So na how business dey make money?”
“Exactly.”
Emeka continued:
“Two businesses fit sell almost the same thing…”
“But the way dem make money fit completely different.”
Kunle became interested.
“How?”
Emeka smiled.
“That one na wetin we go learn.”
🕐 1:10 P.M.
Emeka decided to compare two simple businesses.
Business A:
A woman sells food directly to customers.
She buys ingredients.
She cooks.
She sells each plate.
If she sells 50 plates, she makes money from those 50 plates.
But if she doesn't cook or sell tomorrow, there may be no sales.
Business B:
Another person also sells food.
But this person has built a system.
He has:
✔️ Standard recipes
✔️ Trained staff
✔️ Regular suppliers
✔️ Delivery arrangements
✔️ Repeat customers
✔️ Online ordering
✔️ Clear pricing
✔️ Daily sales records
The two businesses may sell similar products.
But their business models and systems are different.
Emeka looked at Kunle.
“See why working hard alone no be enough?”
Kunle nodded.
“One person fit dey work inside the business.”
“Another person fit dey build a business wey fit work through systems.”
“Exactly.”
🕒 3:30 P.M.
Emeka opened his notebook again.
This time he wrote:
HOW DOES THIS BUSINESS MAKE MONEY?
Then he listed some important questions:
💰 WHO PAYS?
🎯 WHAT ARE THEY PAYING FOR?
📦 WHAT VALUE ARE WE PROVIDING?
💵 HOW MUCH DO THEY PAY?
🔄 HOW OFTEN DO THEY PAY?
📈 WHAT DOES IT COST TO SERVE THEM?
⚙️ CAN THE PROCESS BE REPEATED?
🚀 CAN THE BUSINESS GROW?
Emeka realised something.
Starting a business should not only be:
“What can I sell?”
It should also be:
“How does the whole business work?”
🌙 THAT EVENING
Emeka looked at his ₦350,000.
On Day 1, he was looking for something to start.
By Day 7, he was learning how to think differently.
Now, Week 2 was pushing him into another level.
He began asking:
Who is paying?
Why are they paying?
What exactly are they paying for?
How much does it cost me to deliver the value?
How often can they buy?
Can I serve more customers?
Can I create systems?
Can the business operate efficiently without everything depending on me?
He smiled.
He finally understood:
🔥 A BUSINESS IS MORE THAN THE PRODUCT YOU SELL.
It is also the MODEL BEHIND THE MONEY.
💡 THE BUSINESS LESSON
Many people choose a business because:
❌ “Everybody dey do am.”
❌ “People dey make money from am.”
❌ “I like the product.”
❌ “The business looks profitable.”
But before putting money into any business, ask:
✅ WHO IS THE CUSTOMER?
✅ WHAT VALUE ARE WE OFFERING?
✅ WHO PAYS US?
✅ HOW MUCH DO THEY PAY?
✅ HOW OFTEN DO THEY PAY?
✅ WHAT DOES IT COST TO SERVE THEM?
✅ WHAT REMAINS AFTER COSTS?
✅ CAN THE MODEL GROW?
Remember:
PRODUCT ≠ BUSINESS MODEL.
A product is what you sell.
A business model explains how the business creates value, delivers value and captures value.
And sometimes, the difference between struggling with a business and building a stronger one is not simply working harder.
It is understanding the model.
🔥 YOU FIT WORK VERY HARD AND STILL REMAIN BROKE IF THE BUSINESS MODEL NO MAKE SENSE.
🎯 DAY 8 BUSINESS CHALLENGE
Choose one business idea you are considering.
Don't just write the product.
Answer these questions:
1️⃣ WHO IS YOUR CUSTOMER?
2️⃣ WHAT PROBLEM ARE YOU SOLVING?
3️⃣ WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU SELLING?
4️⃣ WHO WILL PAY YOU?
5️⃣ HOW MUCH WILL THEY PAY?
6️⃣ HOW OFTEN CAN THEY BUY?
7️⃣ WHAT WILL IT COST YOU TO SERVE THEM?
8️⃣ WHAT WILL REMAIN AFTER YOUR COSTS?
9️⃣ CAN YOU SERVE MORE CUSTOMERS WITHOUT YOUR COSTS RISING TOO FAST?
🔟 IF YOU STOP WORKING FOR ONE DAY, DOES EVERYTHING STOP?
Then ask yourself:
> “DO I REALLY UNDERSTAND THE BUSINESS MODEL, OR I JUST LIKE THE PRODUCT?”
Don't rush to start.
UNDERSTAND HOW THE MONEY MOVES.
📚 WEEK 2: BUSINESS MODELS — UNDERSTAND HOW MONEY MOVES
This is Day 8 of 30 in SCHOOL OF MONEY.
WEEK 1 was about changing the way Emeka thinks about business.
Day 1:
CAPITAL NO DEY? LEARN FIRST!
Day 2:
BUSINESS NO BE JUST “BUY & SELL”!
Day 3:
YOUR PROBLEM FIT BECOME YOUR BUSINESS.
Day 4:
WHO DEY BUY FROM YOU?
Day 5:

Now Week 2 begins:
BUSINESS MODELS — UNDERSTAND HOW MONEY MOVES.

Because if your income depends completely on the hours you personally work, there may be a limit to how far your effort can take you.
