📚 WEEK 1: BUSINESS MINDSET — STOP THINKING LIKE EVERYBODY

🎯 KNOW YOUR NUMBERS BEFORE YOU GROW

Lagos. 6:35 a.m.

Emeka woke up thinking about yesterday's lesson.

He had learnt:

SALES NO BE PROFIT!

His ₦350,000 was still untouched.

But now he had another concern.

He opened his notebook and wrote:

REVENUE → COSTS → PROFIT

Then he asked himself:

> “If I don't understand my numbers, how I wan know whether my business dey grow?”

That question stayed with him.

🕘 9:10 A.M.

Emeka visited a small provisions shop.

The owner looked excited.

“Business don dey grow!”

Emeka smiled.

“Why you say so?”

The man pointed around the shop.

“Last month, I dey sell about ₦300,000 every month. This month, I don reach ₦500,000!”

“Wow!” Emeka replied.

But then he asked:

“How much profit you make?”

The man paused.

“Profit?”

“Yes. After all your expenses.”

The man scratched his head.

“I never really calculate am.”

Emeka opened his notebook.

He wrote:

MORE SALES ≠ MORE PROFIT

🕚 11:25 A.M.

Emeka met Kunle.

“Guy, yesterday I learn say sales no be profit.”

Kunle nodded.

“Correct.”

“But today I discover another thing.”

“Wetin be this one?”

“You need to know your numbers before you grow.”

Kunle laughed.

“Why? If business dey grow, why I need worry?”

Emeka shook his head.

“Because growth fit deceive you.”

He explained:

“You fit increase sales.”

“You fit increase customers.”

“You fit open another branch.”

“You fit employ more people.”

“But if your costs dey increase faster than your profit…”

He paused.

“Your business fit become bigger but weaker.”

Kunle became quiet.

🕐 1:20 P.M.

Emeka decided to use numbers.

Imagine a business makes:

MONTHLY SALES = ₦500,000

The owner feels successful.

But then Emeka asks:

How much did you spend buying the products?

₦350,000

Transport?

₦20,000

Packaging?

₦10,000

Marketing?

₦15,000

Transaction charges?

₦5,000

Other expenses?

₦25,000

Total costs:

₦425,000

What remains?

₦75,000

Emeka looked at Kunle.

“So the business made ₦500,000?”

Kunle replied:

“Sales na ₦500,000.”

“Exactly.”

“And profit na ₦75,000.”

“Correct.”

Then Emeka asked another question:

“What happens if sales increase to ₦700,000 but total costs rise to ₦650,000?”

Kunle calculated.

“₦50,000 profit.”

Emeka smiled.

“So sales increase…”

“But profit reduce.”

“Exactly.”

That was the lesson.

🕒 3:45 P.M.

Emeka opened a fresh page.

At the top, he wrote:

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS.

Underneath, he listed:

💰 SALES 📦 COST OF GOODS 🚚 OPERATING EXPENSES 📈 GROSS PROFIT 💵 NET PROFIT 💳 CASH FLOW 📊 PROFIT MARGIN

He realised that business was not just about money entering the account.

He needed to understand where the money came from.

Where it was going.

What each sale was costing him.

And what was actually remaining.

Then he wrote:

MEASURE → UNDERSTAND → IMPROVE → GROW

🌙 THAT EVENING

Emeka looked at his ₦350,000.

A few days ago, he was thinking:

“Which business can I start?”

Now his questions were different.

How much capital do I need?

What will each product cost me?

How much can I sell it for?

What are my operating expenses?

What is my profit per sale?

What is my monthly profit?

How much cash do I need to keep the business running?

How much can I safely reinvest?

He smiled.

He finally understood:

GROWTH SHOULD NOT BE MEASURED BY SALES ALONE.

A serious entrepreneur knows the numbers.

Because you cannot properly manage what you don't measure.

💡 THE BUSINESS LESSON

Many people think business growth means:

❌ More customers

❌ More sales

❌ More products

❌ Bigger shop

❌ More branches

But real business growth should also answer:

✅ Is profit increasing?

✅ Are costs under control?

✅ Is cash flow healthy?

✅ Is each sale still profitable?

✅ Is the business becoming more efficient?

Remember:

SALES → COSTS → PROFIT → REINVESTMENT → GROWTH

Don't grow blindly.

Know your numbers.

Track them regularly.

Use them to make better decisions.

Because:

🔥 A BUSINESS CAN GROW IN SIZE AND STILL LOSE MONEY.

🎯 DAY 6 BUSINESS CHALLENGE

Choose one business idea you are considering.

Write down:

1️⃣ Expected monthly sales:

2️⃣ Cost of buying/producing your products:

3️⃣ Transport and delivery costs:

4️⃣ Marketing costs:

5️⃣ Rent, electricity, data and other expenses:

6️⃣ Total monthly costs:

7️⃣ Expected monthly profit:

8️⃣ How much profit will remain after all costs?

Then ask yourself:

> “IF MY SALES DOUBLE, WILL MY PROFIT ALSO DOUBLE?”

Don't guess.

CALCULATE.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS BEFORE YOU GROW.
