π‘ COPYRIGHT MYTH vs FACT
A Weekly Copyright Awareness Series
By the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC)
β MYTH
βMaking books accessible for persons with visual disabilities is too difficult, expensive and time-consuming. It is easier to produce and sell only in the original format.β
π βBraille? Audio? Large print? That's too much work!β
β
COPYRIGHT FACT
Accessibility and copyright can work together.
Nigeriaβs Copyright Act, 2022 recognises the importance of making published works available in accessible formats for persons who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise print-disabled, subject to applicable legal conditions.
This reflects the objectives of the Marrakesh Treaty, which promotes access to published works for eligible persons who cannot effectively read print materials.
Accessible formats may include Braille, audio and large print, particularly to support learning and education.
Authors, publishers, educational institutions and other stakeholders are encouraged to seek appropriate guidance and explore lawful ways to make works accessible.
So, instead of saying:
π βIt is too much work. Let us forget about it.β
Ask:
π‘ βHow can we make this work accessible within the law?β
