Living in Lagos will humble you very fast if you’re not careful with rent. I’ve had moments where I was seriously checking my options because paying high rent just didn’t make sense for me at that time. So I started paying attention to areas people actually live in when they’re trying to save money.

One place that always comes up is Agege.

I’ve been there many times, and I know people who stay there. Rent is still on the affordable side compared to a lot of places. You might not get luxury, but you’ll definitely find something decent if you search well. Plus, there’s always movement, food, and everything you need around you.

Then there’s Ikorodu

This one is a bit far depending on where you work, but if your goal is to really cut costs, Ikorodu is always part of the conversation. I’ve seen apartments there that are way cheaper than what you’d get on the mainland, closer to town. The only thing is you have to think about transport and your daily movement.

Ijegun is another place I’ve noticed.

Not everybody talks about it, but if you ask around, you’ll hear that rent there is still manageable. It’s one of those areas where people stay when they’re trying to balance affordability and still be within Lagos.

I can’t forget Mushin

Mushin is busy and not for everyone, but if you can adapt, you’ll find cheaper accommodation there. I’ve seen people manage well there because they’re close to many parts of Lagos and still not paying crazy rent.

And then Ojodu Berger.

This one surprised me because it depends on where exactly you look. Some parts are expensive, but if you go deeper, you can actually find more affordable options. Plus, the location makes movement easier compared to staying very far out.

What I’ve personally learned is that cheap rent in Lagos always comes with a trade-off

It could be distance, traffic, or the kind of environment. So it really depends on what you can tolerate. For me, I always think about how much I’m saving versus the stress I’ll face daily.

At the end of the day, Lagos has options for every budget. You just need to look well, ask questions, and sometimes go beyond the popular areas.
