THE LORD’S COMING IS NEARER
“And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” – Romans 13:11-12 (NIV)
Paul does not write to spiritual insomniacs. He calls the church out of a dangerous slumber and into awake expectation. Notice his staggering claim: “our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” Time is not a flat circle; it is a divine countdown. With every sunrise, the gap between our first breath of faith and Christ’s return grows shorter. The night of sin, confusion, and moral decay is receding, and the Day is breaking.
This awakening demands action. Paul follows the call to wakefulness with a clear command: “put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” You cannot claim to be waiting for the King while refusing to live like He is at the door. The deeds of darkness are the secret compromises, hidden habits, and worldly patterns that dull your spiritual vision. The armor of light is not a metaphor for comfort; it is the practical righteousness, disciplined obedience, and radiant truth that reflect Christ to a dying world.
Salvation nearness is measured not by the calendar, but by your readiness. Every day that passes is either watering the weeds of compromise or cultivating the harvest of holiness.
Conduct a honest spiritual audit. Identify one “deed of darkness” you have tolerated for too long. Confess it, renounce it, and replace it with a deliberate practice of light: disciplined prayer, scripture meditation, or intentional acts of love and integrity. Let your life announce that you are awake.
PRAYER
Father, wake my soul to the urgency of this hour. I refuse to sleep while the Master is at the door. Strip from my life every compromise and clothe me in the armor of light. Help me live each day with eternal weight, so that when Christ returns, I am not found resting in the debris of the night, but standing in the brightness of His glory. I am ready. Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
